Thousands of Flowers from Romania…..Guest Blogger: Penny Peters

August 24, 2015

The following is a blog about Romanian embroidery from Penny Peters who teaches many classes with me at our center in La Conner, Washington.  She also travels the world viewing textiles and art in general.  We are so happy to see her slides and collection when she returns.  Gail Harker

Thousand of Flowers from Romania

By the end of the 20th Century regional, traditional costumes, often heavily embroidered, were no longer being made as global industrialization created the need for women’s hands to do other work.  Happily, loving hands are preserving these beautiful creations that inspire wonder and admiration in future generations.

The woman’s costume pictured here was embroidered in the mid-20th Century, probably in the Brasov District in Transylvania, Romania, an ethnically Bulgarian neighborhood.  It was gifted to Josip Borz Tito in 1966. Marshal Tito was Prime Minister and later President for Life of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It is current displayed, along with other regional costumes, in the House of Flowers, the mausoleum of Marshal Tito and his wife in Belgrade, Serbia.

Even though it is protected by glass, details of the costume could be clearly photographed. All the articles of apparel are hand embroidered –  the sleeves of the blouse, the vest and the skirt. Photography © Penny Peters
