Pure Joy of Making Art

March 3, 2016

This past weekend we held a class at our center with a group of people participating in the creative art of starting a journal. Everyone’s reason for starting an art journal was different. I was conditioned to describe my book –  a sketchbook ( sounds like drawing.) When I think of the description of what it could really be – an art journal  – these words seems to umbrella a broader range of ideas.  Any art style and unique media – from fabric to papers  fit the concept.  People liked the thought of working spontaneously on new ideas that interested them.  We talked about how a presentation journal (one that was preplanned with a number of art works in it) was different than a spontaneous journal.  We discussed combining words with visuals in exciting ways.   Adding captions  or working from non objective shapes to make pleasing combinations of line, shape, texture and color motivated everyone, including me.  We worked in a small sketchbook/journal format and added  torn and cut paper, bright watercolors, acrylics and colored pencils. Having a private place such as in a journal/sketchbook to try out new ideas is one of the most compelling  inspirations about making art in journals.  Anyone, no matter age, experience, place or position can benefit from the pure joy of making art!!!!  Here are a few pictures of the weekend.    Gail
