Thinking about Orange

October 30, 2013

When I think about the color orange, I feel a warm glow emanating from either a fire or the sun. It is difficult to know how visualizing colors actually impacts us. Scientists continue to study color and its many effects.  New creative possibilities can evolve if you can get rid of the idea that you have to wear the color or paint your walls with the colors.  Have a look at some of our online color students’  versions of orange in color schemes. Using other rich hues along with orange could totally change how you feel about this color.

Catching glimpses of very orange colorful pumpkins at Hallowe’en is the first bright light in the cold dark autumn environment. I remember seeing piles of pumpkins piled high in front of grocery stores when we first came to the U.S. in the 90s. What a contrast to the light and buttery colored squash we left behind in Britain.

Here is a Wikipedia meaning for the word orange:  The word is derived from a Dravidian language, and it passed through numerous other languages including Sanskrit and Old French before reaching the English language. The earliest uses of the word in English refer to the fruit, and the colour was later named after the fruit. Before the English-speaking world was exposed to the fruit, the colour was referred to as “yellow-red” (geoluread in Old English) or “red-yellow”.[1]

On my way to Seattle, I saw gorgeous orange trees. Liquidambers I think they were, and an orange cat, and of course pumpkins. Autumn is the perfect time of year for finding orange!

I have tried to incorporate more orange and red-orange in my landscape here at home. It is so pleasing against the backdrop of green. My living room is also painted red-orange. This is my favorite time of year because of those orange hues everywhere you look. We’ve had quite a bit of road construction in and around town and they put up the diamond shape warning signs everywhere! Was just thinking yesterday about how fitting those signs are in this season.
