Mark Making with Wheat Paste

October 23, 2013

A group of students travelled to be in the studio for a 2 day class with Martha Cole for one purpose.  That was to make creative patterns and designs using wheat paste on paper and fabric. Who would have thought that such an inexpensive medium such as wheat paste with the addition of a little acrylic medium could be such a powerful expressive means of creativity? That was just the start of the process as collage materials, oil and chalk pastels and colored pencils were added to make richly textured surfaces. Some students were going to use these papers for making a book with Martha in the class that starts tomorrow called The Extreme Photo Album. ( still a couple of places left.Others were making a collection of papers to create yet more designs as another layer or to machine stitch on  – or both.  A great process taught by a great tutor!!!

I really loved trying to build layers of wheat paste to get interesting papers. Martha showed us wheat paste on fabric which then can be machine embroidered. So many possibilities. Hope Martha will come again next year!
