Overcoming My Fear of Art – Guest Blogger: Gillian Smith

November 4, 2012

Studies in Art and Design – Level 3– Class Name: Wintergreen

Exhibition

I started this course with trepidation as I had no art background. Along the way,  I have overcome my “fear of art” and know that I will continue with stitched work that incorporates my new understanding of techniques and media. I live amongst arbutus trees and love the way they are constantly changing, from clusters of white flowers in the spring to rust-coloured berries in the fall, from dark rust bark to peeling curls that reveal fresh smooth green bark underneath. I have tried to capture some of their colours and textures in my work and particularly enjoyed learning how to design and use stamps and stencils in carrying out my tree theme.  © Gillian Smith
