Black White and Red Auction a Success

October 13, 2012

Gallery, Library and Offices Project

Your participation on October 9th helped us raise just over $3000.00 toward the completion of our on-site gallery.  Thank you to all those who contributed and those who purchased artwork.  Thank you also to our students and contributors who have donated in the past and also to Don and Nick for soldiering on.   We were inspired by the imaginative submissions we received and the general enthusiasm surrounding this venture.   Sabrina was our auctioneer for the day.  She hardly left her desk because of all the bidding.  There was a real feeling of excitement around the office as the computer pinged every time a bid was made.  One student even bid against herself as she wanted an item so badly.  The pictures in the slideshow:  One felted pear by Ruth Lane.  Maureen and Sheila stand beside a Black, White and Red advertisement at Maple Hall during Quiltfest.  The rest of the pictures display –  building the storage unit beside the Gallery. We couldn’t continue in the gallery until this much needed item was erected.

So many students ask us how the gallery is coming along when they are here for a class. There never seems to be enough time to really tell you about all the different projects that have and are happening.  In fact, it is not just about building a Gallery.  Don  created a floor plan just after we moved in last July for the garage renovation.   The front part of the garage is being transformed into 3 new office spaces and a Gallery.   The little house that is now being used as as office space will be transformed into a library and a student room with kitchen (last on the list.)   In order to put our large library back together again, we need the space that the present offices are in.   Floors 2 and 3 of Barn House is currently serving as storage space for our library.  The garage has  been used as storage space for materials, tools and equipment.  We had a little interruption when the student classroom washroom needed to have a toilet replumbed, remove the carpet and paint the walls but we are now moving forward again.  A list of projects from the past year:

  • Removal of garage doors to add 2 windows and a double entry door to the gallery
  • Built a loft with ladder in the garage for storage
  • electrician wired entire office and gallery space for lighting, computer and server
  • ran cable for computers through the ceiling space
  • Ran a gas pipe underground from far side of Barn to the garage for forced air heating
  • Furnace installed in Space
  • added accordion door to the gallery
  • placed new siding on garage
  • framed walls for 3 offices, a gallery, hallway and closets
  • Storage Shed: this week’s  pictures show building the storage space. The roof had shingles added in the nick of time – before the rain came pouring down.       Gail

Wonderful news about the money raised! The work you folks manage to do amazes me. Sounds like the auction could becomea yearly event.

I’m so glad that the auction was a success. It was fun participating. It’s exciting to see the construction photos and I can’t wait to see how the new spaces develop.

I was in California the day of the Auction, but I managed to get connected and make bids along with everyone else. It was truly exciting to watch the bids come in. Because I had a slow connection, someone beat me out at the last minute on one piece. I am thrilled about the success of the auction and progress on the storage area. I can see our dreams coming to fruition.
