Printmaking in the Studio

August 18, 2010

The class in the studio this week are in their 4th session of the Level 3 Certificate in Art and Design.  They are using this session to explore various methods of printmaking.

Marny cuts shapes from adhesive-backed foam sheets, which she will apply to a block when she is happy with the arrangement.

Printing techniques are an excellent way to try out different design possibilities – particularly those that use repetitive elements.  Rather than having to sketch a design over and over, a single print block can be created and used to explore the design in different orientations, tiled in varied patterns, or used in combination with other print blocks.

Leslie uses a brayer to roll a thin layer of acrylic paint out onto her block so that she can explore geometric pattern.

Students may then take their printed ideas into another medium, or they may build upon their printed papers with other art materials to create rich and colorful surfaces.
